This feature helps maintain a comfortable temperature inside the car. But what happens if the Cabin Overheat Protection in your Tesla isn’t working?
What is Tesla’s Overheat Protection
Tesla’s cabin overheat protection relies on sensors to track the temperature inside your vehicle. If it gets too hot, the system turns on to cool the car’s interior down.
The sensors detect when the interior temperature exceeds a preset limit. Usually the default is 105 degrees.
The system then activates the climate control to lower the temp to a safe level. It will run the A/C, circulate the air, and, if necessary, turn on the fan to pull in fresh air from outside.
Cabin overheat protection helps prevent damage to your Tesla’s interior. And ensures the vehicle is comfortable when you return.

How Does Tesla Cabin Overheat Protection Work?
This feature utilizes the car’s air conditioning system to keep the cabin cool. When the temperature inside the vehicle reaches a certain threshold (105 degrees Fahrenheit).
This feature activates the air conditioning to cool down the cabin, and ensure a comfortable environment.
Why Is My Tesla Cabin Overheat Protection Not Working?
Why isn’t your Tesla keeping the cabin cool when parked in the hot sun? Here are a few reasons why.
Not In Park
Tesla’s cabin overheat protection may not work if the vehicle is not parked. It’s important to remember that this feature only works when the vehicle is in park mode.
The Battery is Below 20%
If the battery level in your Tesla drops below 20%, the cabin overheat protection feature will not function.
Since the system turns off this feature to preserve the remaining battery charge.
The Vehicle is Not Updated as Delivered
Have you received your new Tesla recently? If yes, the Tesla delivery team may not have updated it from transportation to delivery mode.
As a result, your new car may not have access to the compartment overheat protection function.
To update, schedule a service appointment with your local Tesla service center.
They will install the required update. And enable the setting to keep your Tesla’s cabin temperature in a safe range.
Parking More Than 12 hours
If you plan to leave your Tesla unattended for longer than 12 hours. Be aware that the Tesla cabin overheat protection may not activate.
The sensors can sometimes misread the temperature. Or humidity levels inside the vehicle in these extended parking situations.
Set Main Console
To prevent overheating in hot weather. Push the “Auto” Climate control button on the main console in your Tesla.
This will adjust the temperature to a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The Auto setting uses sensors to track the cabin temperature. And activate the air conditioning when needed.
Cabin Below 105°F
The Cabin Overheat Protection keeps the inside temperature below 105°F when parked.
If the interior temp surpasses this threshold, the climate control system will turn on to lower the temperature.
But, some owners have reported problems with the Overheat Protection feature not functioning, for example, allowing the cabin temperature to rise above the 105°F limit.
Tesla updates often come with improvements to the overheating protection feature. In some cases, updates may even enhance the feature’s effectiveness.
So if you find that your protection isn’t working as well as it used to, consider checking for any available updates.
To check if your cabin overheats protection is still enabled. Go to the “Climate” section of your vehicle’s touchscreen display, and select “Cabin Overheat Protection”. Turn it on if it’s off.
Overheating Protection Gets Disabled
If your Tesla’s cabin overheat protection isn’t activating, check that the feature didn’t get disabled.
Head to Controls > Safety & Security and toggle on ‘Cabin Overheat Protection.’
